Carmine Appice’s Guitar Zeus – Conquering Heroes – Fuel
Guitar records have never been my thing, how many times can you listen to the same solos in a different key? That is why I like the Carmine Appice Guitar Zeus projects. They bring the element of shred but with song structures, vocals and tastier guitar work. With his vocalist extraordinaire Kelly Keeling in tow he brought rock and blues based tunes to some of rock’s best axe slingers for their take and they did well. Trying to pick out a favorite is a hard task for this project as most is far above par but there are stand outs. This Time Around featuring Malmsteen along with Nobody Knew featuring Brian May caught my attention because they almost did not sound themselves, taking their craft to another level. Safe Featuring Neal Schon states why he has been playing for almost 4 decades. His playing is very fluid and stands out in any setting. Ted Nugent jumps in with Days Are Nights and you know it is Ted in a heartbeat, his tone dirty and in your face and this is just the stand outs from the first CD. The second disc features Stevie Salas, Bruce Kulick, Viv Campbell, Dweezil Zappa amongst others and the heat never lets up. Kelly has a dirty blues base voice and it is in comfortable surroundings with each axe slinger. Tony Franklin is in here on Bass and his rhythms are perfect and timeless. Tony is an amazing bassist and his playing fully compliments Carmine’s amazing chops. Want a piece of what is going on in today’s guitar world, look no further than this installment in Guitar Zeus.
